Carmen Maria Lugo

Carmen Maria Lugo (82) of Passaic, passed away on Sunday, January 17th, 2021. Born in Ceiba, Puerto Rico to Vicente Hernandez and Petra Rosario. She was the oldest of four siblings; Luz Sanquiche, Ramon Hernandez, and Antonia Rosa. At a young age she moved to New York looking for a better life and opportunities. After learning English, she became a successful paraprofessional and translator for the New York Board of Education, working for both Public School 83 and Public School 72. As a faithful Christian woman and active member of La Hermosa Church in East Harlem, she met her husband, Pedro Luis Lugo, who was the deacon of the church. They were married for 33 years until Pedro passed away in 1991. Carmen moved to Passaic in 1992 to be closer to her sisters. She was a wonderful, kind, giving person, and established meaningful friendships with neighbors as well as her within the Iglesia Reformada de Bethel Church and Primera Iglesia Bautista Hispana de Passaic. She is survived by her children Moises and Yvette Lugo; grandchildren, Alex Soutiere and Ivelisse Cruz-Caldwell (Melvin Caldwell); and great grandson, Jamian Alec Worrell. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 23rd, 2021 from 12:00pm-3:00pm in Funeraria Alvarez, 66 Passaic Avenue, Passaic NJ. Cremation is private.
