Edwin Acosta Acevedo

Edwin Acosta Acevedo born on May 25, 1953 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, passed away

peacefully on July 6, 2025. Affectionately known as “Eddie” by his friends, Edwin was a

beloved member of his community and faithful Usher at Iglesia Bautista Nueva Vida in

Mayaguez.

Throughout his life, Edwin was known for his generosity, wisdom and unmistakable

sense of humor. He served as a father figure and dear friend to many, always offering

support, laughter, and compassion. One of his greatest passions was helping children in

need – especially through the church’s children’s ministry, where he played a vital role in

providing resources for clothing, food and school supplied to underprivileged youth.

To honor Edwin’s legacy of thoughtful giving, the family has partnered with Iglesia

Bautista Nueva Vida to establish a fund in his name. This fund will continue to support

the children’s ministry and carry forward the love and kindness Edwin so freely shared.

Edwin will be deeply missed by his surviving siblings, Dorothea “Doris” Rivera, Juan

“Juany” Rivera, Jacinto “Chin” Rivera, Ruben Acosta and Milagros “Piti” Acosta, his

children, Star Emilia Lopez, Raquel Acosta, Anibal Mateo and Diana Ortiz; his adopted

daughter, Ibis Menendez-Valle; and his grandchildren, Alliah Mae Monique Boyd,

Anastasia Lee Cipriano, Ka’Vai Anthony Augustin, Yazmin Skye Martinez, David Justin

Martinez, Mia Mateo, Jayden Arias, Hannibal Mateo, Serenity Mateo, Luis Ortiz, Jr. and

Christian Ortiz. He also leaves behind many cousins, nieces and nephews who

cherished his presence in their lives.

A memorial service will be held in his honor on Friday, July 18, 2025 from 5:00 PM to

7:00 PM at Alvarez Funeraria Inc, 66 Passaic Ave, Passaic, NJ 07055. A separate

church service for his church family will take place on Saturday, July 19, 2025 beginning

at 7:00 PM at Union Avenue Baptist Church, 413 Union Avenue, Paterson, NJ.
