Teresita Oneida Hernandez (nee Prieto) (85) of Hamilton, passed away on Monday, November 16th, 2020. Born in Cienfuegos, Cuba as the youngest of five children of the late Gregorio Prieto and Aniceta Prieto (nee Rodriguez). Teresita married Carlos Hernandez on March 8th, 1962 in Cienfuegos, Cuba. She attended La Escuela Normal de Santa Clara para Maestros and began her lifelong career in education. After immigrating to the United State in 1968, Teresita obtained her Bachelors of Arts in Elementary Education at Montclair State College with a certification in ESL. She held a teaching position with the Passaic Public School system for over 25 years. In her role as educator, Teresita was widely recognized for her commitment to education and enriching the lives of her students. As an immigrant from Cuba and a lifelong resident of Passaic, Teresita was actively involved in her community. She co-founded the Liceo Cubano de Passaic, a social club that facilitated cultural engagements and instilled Cuban traditions for several generations. "El Liceo" was a second home for Teresita, as she joyously danced at various gatherings, participated in weekly Bingo, maintained friendships for decades, and coordinated special occasion events. She was especially proud and dedicated to her various roles as an executive member. Teresita is preceded in death by her husband, Carlos (Charles) M. Hernandez (1-15-2007); her brothers, Luis Prieto and Evelio Prieto; and her sister-in-law, Sophia Prieto. She is survived by her son, Carlos A. Hernandez with his wife Soraya, and their children: Ashley, Alexis, and Adam; her daughters, Teresita Villamil with her husband, John, and their sons: Bryan and Christopher with his wife Kelly, and Catherine Dunn with her husband Daniel, and their children, Alyssa, Justin, and Mackenzie. She is also survived by her step-daughter, Mayra Ramos and her daughter Yvette Ramos and step-son, Carlos M. Hernandez, and his daughters Tatiana and Rosa and great-grandson, Gavin Salvador and great-granddaughter Lorelai Villamil. She is lovingly remembered by her siblings, Dr. Blas Prieto and his wife Mirta, sister Maria Prieto, and sister-in-law Moraima Prieto. She will be missed by her large extended family and the many friends who became family. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 22nd, 2020 from 2:00pm-6:00pm in Funeraria Alvarez, 66 Passaic Avenue, Passaic NJ. Mass will be celebrated on Monday, November 23rd, 2020 at 10:00am in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, 10 Saint Francis Way, Passaic NJ. Entombment, to follow, at 11:30am in Holy Cross Cemetery, 340 Ridge Road, North Arlington NJ.
